960 sqm of ‘Floating’ Tiles

An innovative fixing system from ARDEX allows tiles to be installed without adhering to the substrate- creating a floating tiled floor. Ideal for retail and other leased properties.

Location: Norwest, Sydney
Project Date: October 2005

The Beaumont chain of tile retailers has used the ARDEX X 23 system in four of its stores so far, with excellent results. The latest was the company’s new flagship store in Castle Hill where all 960m2 of floor was tiled with the ARDEX X 23 system, using 600x600mm polished porcelains in the main areas and a multitude of various sized tiles in the display areas. Not a single tile was damaged throughout the process, there were no cracked grout joints - both of which are likely with poor point loading tiling systems - even the weight of pallets of tiles and the promotional Holden Viva were not a problem.

ARDEX X 23 system really comes into its own is when the tiles need to be replaced due to the end of a lease term or their aesthetics are no longer desirable. The mat is simply lifted, bringing the tiles with it – without any damage to the original substrate. This method brings with it significant refurbishment savings compared to the traditional method.

Beaumont’s NSW trade manager, Ian Fry, said that although they immediately liked the concept of ARDEX X 23 they were quite apprehensive about the practicality of the system. Having personally seen it work flawlessly in the new store, his fears have been allayed - and they have been pleasantly surprised by how well the system works and how quickly the commercial tilers adopted it.
